Background of the Study
Online education has gained significant traction in universities worldwide, especially with the advancement of digital learning platforms. In Nigeria, universities have adopted distance learning to cater to a broader range of students, providing access to education even for those in remote areas. One major challenge faced by distance learning programs is ensuring academic integrity during online examinations. Traditional methods of proctoring are not feasible for online exams, raising concerns about cheating and the credibility of the examination process.

AI-based online proctoring systems have been proposed as solutions to monitor and verify the identity of students during online exams, track their behavior, and detect cheating attempts through advanced algorithms such as facial recognition, eye-tracking, and keystroke analysis. These systems offer a more efficient and scalable solution compared to traditional proctoring methods, providing universities with tools to maintain academic integrity in online examinations. However, despite the growing adoption of AI-based proctoring systems, their effectiveness, usability, and ethical implications in the Nigerian context, especially in Yola North LGA, Adamawa State, remain under-researched.

This study aims to analyze the effectiveness of AI-based online proctoring systems in maintaining academic integrity during university distance learning examinations in Yola North LGA, Adamawa State. By examining various AI-based proctoring technologies, the study will assess their ability to detect cheating, their user-friendliness, and their acceptance among students and faculty members.

Statement of the Problem
Online distance learning programs in universities face significant challenges regarding academic integrity, particularly in examination settings. The absence of physical supervision during online exams makes it easier for students to engage in dishonest practices, undermining the credibility of the examination process. While AI-based proctoring systems have been proposed as a solution, their effectiveness, security, and acceptance remain unclear, especially in the context of Nigerian universities in Yola North LGA. This research seeks to evaluate AI-based proctoring systems, examining their potential to detect cheating and enhance the overall integrity of online examinations.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To analyze the effectiveness of AI-based online proctoring systems in maintaining academic integrity during distance learning examinations in Yola North LGA, Adamawa State.
  2. To assess the usability and user acceptance of AI-based proctoring systems among students and faculty members in distance learning programs.
  3. To evaluate the ethical considerations of implementing AI-based proctoring systems in Nigerian universities.

Research Questions

  1. How effective are AI-based online proctoring systems in detecting cheating during distance learning examinations in Yola North LGA?
  2. What is the level of usability and acceptance of AI-based proctoring systems among students and faculty members in distance learning programs?
  3. What ethical challenges arise from the use of AI-based online proctoring systems in university examinations in Yola North LGA?

Research Hypotheses

  1. AI-based online proctoring systems are effective in detecting cheating during university distance learning examinations in Yola North LGA.
  2. Students and faculty members in Yola North LGA demonstrate a positive level of usability and acceptance of AI-based online proctoring systems.
  3. Ethical concerns related to privacy, surveillance, and data security arise with the implementation of AI-based online proctoring systems in Nigerian universities.

Significance of the Study
This research will provide valuable insights into the practical implementation of AI-based online proctoring systems, particularly in Nigerian universities offering distance learning programs. The findings can help educational institutions improve the credibility and integrity of online examinations, enhancing the quality of distance education. Furthermore, the study’s focus on ethical considerations will offer a balanced perspective on the pros and cons of using AI for academic integrity.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on universities in Yola North LGA, Adamawa State, offering distance learning programs. It will specifically evaluate the effectiveness, usability, and ethical issues surrounding AI-based online proctoring systems for distance learning examinations. The study is limited to this region and may not account for the experiences or challenges faced by universities in other parts of Nigeria.

Definitions of Terms
AI-Based Online Proctoring System: A system that uses AI technologies, such as facial recognition, behavior analysis, and eye-tracking, to monitor and ensure academic integrity during online exams.
Distance Learning Examinations: Examinations conducted as part of an online learning program where students are not physically present in a traditional exam setting.
Academic Integrity: The adherence to ethical principles in education, ensuring that students complete their own work honestly and without cheating.
